Amber Rose Sticks Up For Herself

This question was provoked by an exchange between Amber Rose and Lil Duval this morning via twitter.

Amber Rose wrote:

Morning Twit Fam, [I] didn’t really wake up in a good mood today. I’m just so sick of being ridiculed. [People] assuming things without knowing. I’m super nice to everyone I meet. I’m a very caring compassionate person. I don’t deserve to be talked about so negatively. I really hate explaining myself that’s why I stay so quiet but I will say this….. I was with my ex for 2 years and now I have a new Love. [Two People] that’s it. If that makes me a whore then so be it. I have NEVER slept with Fabolous, Drake, Chris Brown, Amare, Lebron, Cassidy etc nor have I ever been a Prostitute.

                               

Duval’s response was:

No disrespect, but that’s what comes [with] being around so many different men. In our mind if [you are] with him [you] f*cked him. In this world, it’s not about what you think you are, it’s about what people SEE [you] as and it’s up to you to make them see what you see. You’ll see what I’m [tryin] to say later on. [I'm] not bashing you. Just understand [that] you are what’s perceived in this industry.

I’ve never met Amber Rose a day in my life, nor has 99% of the people who make comments on her twitter or blog posts. After reading the exchange between her and Duval, I realized that my perception of her has shifted a little over the past year. I can only make judgments by what she allows me to see. Is it fair? No. But that’s life.

When Amber was a guest on Foxxhole Radio, one of the co-hosts made the argument that she was famous for being with Kanye. Her response was, “He was with a girl for six years that he was going to marry. What’s her name again??“. Her comments were directed towards Kanye’s ex-girlfriend but the difference between Amber Rose and Alexis to me had nothing to do with who had the most appealing “look” or star quality. It had everything to do with how far one was willing to go to be noticed and talked about. You would never in a million years see Alexis on South Beach in Miami topless and rocking a g-string.  

Let’s face it, since Amber’s break up with Kanye, she has been photo’d with the likes of Reggie Bush, Chris Brown, Fabolous, Wiz Khalifa and Amar’e Stoudemire, knowing that people would make assumptions about those photos. She’s also been photo’d kissing model Rosa Acosta.

Those photos, in return, have helped keep her relevant over the last year. So, whether they were for publicity or not, if you are willing to pose and participate in those photo ops, than you have to know what the perception of you will be. You can’t reap the rewards [the press] and then complain about it…..

Or can you?

     In a nutshell, if Amber Rose wants to extend her 15 minutes [cue Kim Kardashian], she has to first figure out who her target audience is (the people who will buy into her brand) and then figure out what image she wants to sell them. She is very much in control of how she is perceived and right now, whether she wants to admit it, she’s famous for the men she’s been linked to.

Amber’s response to Lil Duval:

I feel [you] but you [asked] me for a pic when I met [you] I took the pic with [you] cuz I’m a fan of [yours] also. Just cuz I take a pic [with] someone doesn’t mean I’m hanging with them or sleeping with them.
